This is what happens when boys pack....

James is on a school field trip to Atlanta this week. Two nights, three days, with outings to the Atlanta Zoo, Coca-Cola, CNN, and Stone Mountain. He's been thinking about this trip for months, and last week, he told me he would take care of packing for the trip.

The night before he was scheduled to leave, I told James I wanted to double-check the suitcase he had packed for the trip to Atlanta. Being a good mom (*grin*), I wanted to make sure he had packed enough clothes, the right kinds of clothes, as well as things like, …say, …a toothbrush. So a few minutes later he wheeled his HUGE suitcase into the living room, and opened it for me.
Aside - I was totally surprised by the fact that he had chosen a pretty big wheeled suitcase for this trip, as this is the same kid who has gone off to Granny's house for the weekend with nothing but a football. This should have been my first clue that something weird was going on....

But back to the story!

This is what he had packed for Atlanta:

· A blanket (actually it was a twin-sized comforter) and a small pillow. Apparently they must be staying at the only hotel in Atlanta that is bereft of bedding...

· Two pairs of shorts

· Two t-shirts

· 4 pairs of underwear

· A single pair of socks, and they were orange, Halloween-themed knee socks, with spiders, and multicolored toes! Is he really going to wear those?!!

· Two pairs of pajama pants (but no pajama shirts)

· His basketball backboard/hoop (this is the one that hangs on the door of his room) and Nerf basketball.

· His finger flick football game

· Various and sundry toys/games for the bus ride

· The $ I gave him for spending money.

Sadly, missing from his suitcase were:

· Any toiletries, whatsoever – no toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc

· A spare pair of shoes

· Socks - well, normal socks, that is...

· A jacket

· A book to read

His actual clothes could probably have fit in a gallon size Ziploc bag, with a quart to spare, and the remaining space in his suitcase was all the extra, non-essential “stuff”. I think this is the difference between boys and girls….

Adrienne,

This is hilarious. James is one of a kind, I do believe. I have seen my boys put their things in a plastic grocery store bag and declare they were ready to go. Mind you they might not have all of the "necessities" either.

I had to laugh because it brought back fond memories of my son's packing. He used to forget such nonessential things as underwear, etc. And forget the toiletries. Who needs soap or toothpaste? It's much more important to take the fun stuff along.

I hope he has a wonderful trip!

Makes me smile, Adrienne. Hubs and I have been empty nesters for 12 years and next week we will "gain" a "son" for a full week. He is 14, and the youngest of his birth siblings and they have a 3 year old sweet girl from China that they got as a baby. They are headed to Taiwan to pick up his new sister that is 7. So he is at our home and I've already been making a list of things he needs to take with us on vacation. ;-) yes, indeed, we are taking him with us on vacation.

Awww... he will love the big ATL! :) My husband grew up right outside of ATL. The CNN center is awesome.... Coca-Cola, SUPER cool!! Hopefully they will be able to make the trek to Stone Mountain for the laser show!
